Almost two years to the day that Mozilla acq-hired him, Firefox Creative Lead Aza Raskin will be leaving Mozilla on January 1 to found a new startup called Massive Health. Raskin started out as head of user experience at Mozilla Labs where he spearheaded projects such as Tab Candy, Ubiquity, Jetpack, new mobile interfaces, and geolocation specifications.

Google's new cloud computing ChromeOS looks like a plan "to push people into careless computing" by forcing them to store their data in the cloud rather than on machines directly under their control, warns Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the...

There are hundreds of compelling reasons why Linux is better than all the rival operating systems. Here are just 20.

1. Linux is free
No matter how many computers you install it on, the cost of Linux remains the same: zero.
In these days of multi-computer households, this can be a massive saving, especially when you consider the cost of all the programs you have to add to a standard windows installation.
2. Software repositories
Having all the software you need in one place...

This is too funny not to post. The screen grab above comes fromQwiki, the visual search engine which came away with the top prize at our last TechCrunch Disrupt. Qwiki is still in private alpha , but it essentially assembles a visual narrative for millions of topics by pulling together images and text, which is read out loud by a friendly, female robo-voice.

When you search for “AOL” in Qwiki, it prominently features the slide above showing AOL’s precipitous...

Yesterday, we saw horrible latency issues many Gmail users have been experiencing over the past couple of weeks. When I reached out to Google about the issue a few days ago, they told me that they weren’t aware of anything wrong, but would look into it. Well, those of us who noticed it aren’t crazy. Sure enough, there was an issue, and Google says they have now fixed it.

Google reached out to us today with the following statement:

We recently experienced an issue in one of our...

As part of its self-imposed mission to make the web faster, Google has rolled its own image format.
It’s called WebP, and it’s based on open source technology. Google launched the initiative Thursday night with a post on its Chromium blog.
WebP has much in common with JPEG, the most widely used of the web’s image formats. Like JPEG, the new format is intended to be used for photos on web pages, and like JPEG, the photos in a WebP image are compressed using lossy technology....

WebP format could replace JPEG.

Google, in an effort to increase overall speed of the entire Internet, has developed a new image format called WebP.

Based on the VP8 codec, which Google open sourced in May, WebP is a lossy image format that offers an average of 39% reduction in size opposed to JPEG. Google also adapted a lighweight container based on RIFF, which contributes an overhead of 20 bytes per image.

It has been a long while since the first laptop made its way on to store shelves. What led to the invention of a laptop was the necessity of a portable computer that could be lugged around and also worked on, in the absence of direct power supply. All went well until mobile phones with Internet connectivity came along, and that changed the whole dynamics of mobile computing. The mobile Internet, coupled with Internet hot-spots, fuelled the craze of ‘anytime, anywhere computing’ and ...
